The Porsche 991.1 is one of the most appealing modern generations of the 911. Introduced in 2011, the first-generation 991 brought a significant step forward in refinement, technology and performance while retaining Porsche’s naturally aspirated flat-six engines.
With Carrera models using the 3.4-litre engine and Carrera S models receiving the larger 3.8-litre unit, the 991.1 offers a combination of everyday usability, performance and traditional Porsche character that makes these cars increasingly desirable.
However, even though a 991.1 can still look and feel like a relatively modern car, the earliest examples are now around 14 years old. Age, mileage, corrosion and deferred maintenance therefore need to be considered when buying.

Service History & Provenance
As with any Porsche, service history is one of the most important things to establish before buying.
A comprehensive service history is highly desirable
Look beyond service stamps and examine invoices
Check that servicing has been carried out at the correct intervals
Confirm that recalls and relevant campaigns have been completed
Specialist servicing is perfectly acceptable — it does not have to be OPC-only
Look for evidence of preventative maintenance as well as routine servicing
We would much rather see a higher-mileage car with a comprehensive history than a very low-mileage example that has spent long periods standing or has gaps in its maintenance.
A car with 50,000 or even 100,000 miles and a strong history can be a much safer purchase than a 20,000-mile example with little supporting documentation.
Bodywork & Exterior
The 991's aluminium-intensive construction means traditional corrosion is less of a concern than on older Porsche models, but that doesn't mean the bodywork should be overlooked.
Accident Damage & Panel Gaps
Start with a thorough inspection of the exterior.

Porsche-approved N-rated tyres are always worth looking for.
They are not essential — a car can run perfectly well on high-quality non-N-rated tyres — but the use of appropriate premium tyres is generally a positive indication of how the car has been maintained.
If the owner has fitted cheap budget tyres to an expensive Porsche, it is worth considering what other areas of maintenance may have been overlooked.

Air Conditioning Condensers
One of the simple checks worth carrying out on a 991 is behind the front bumper.
The large openings at the front of the car allow road debris, leaves and dirt to accumulate against the air-conditioning condensers.
Over time, this can contribute to corrosion and eventual refrigerant leaks.

The underside of a 991 can hide a surprising amount of corrosion, particularly on cars that have been used year-round.
Brake Lines
Check all brake pipes for:
Surface corrosion

Previous repairs
Damaged coatings
Signs of leakage
Some brake lines are hidden behind the large undertray, meaning a basic MOT or visual inspection may not provide the complete picture.
The undertray should ideally be removed during a proper pre-purchase inspection.
Underbody & Corrosion
The underside of a 991 can tell you a lot about the car's life.
Undertray
The large undertray protects many components but can also hide corrosion and other problems.

Chassis braces

Corroded fixings can make removal of the undertray considerably more difficult, increasing labour time during future maintenance.
Rear Subframe
The rear subframe is steel on these cars and can suffer from surface corrosion.
Surface corrosion does not necessarily mean the car is structurally compromised, but heavily corroded components should be cleaned, treated and protected before the problem progresses.
Exhaust System
Exhaust corrosion is another area to inspect carefully.
The 991's exhaust system is exposed to water, road salt and heat cycles throughout its life.
Exhaust Fixings & Flanges

Severely corroded fixings can make what should be a relatively straightforward repair considerably more involved.
Check for black soot around joints, which can indicate an exhaust leak.
Aftermarket exhaust systems are common on these cars. There is nothing inherently wrong with a quality aftermarket system, but it should be checked for correct fitment, condition and legality.
Engine
One of the major attractions of the 991.1 Carrera is its naturally aspirated flat-six engine.
The 991.1 engines are IMS-free, removing one of the major concerns associated with earlier generations of Porsche 911.
However, that does not mean they are completely immune from engine problems.
Bore Scoring
Bore scoring is possible on these engines, although it is far less common than on some earlier Porsche generations.
Potential signs can include:
Uneven exhaust appearance between banks
Excessive oil consumption
Unusual ticking or knocking noises
Piston slap-type noises

Changeover Valves
The engine bay contains a number of electronically controlled valves responsible for controlling different systems around the vehicle.

Water Pump

Thermostat Housing
The thermostat housing and associated aluminium components can suffer from corrosion.

Tandem pumps are more commonly associated with earlier generations, but they can still become problematic.

The high-pressure fuel pumps are another component worth considering.

Engine Mounts & Dynamic Engine Mounts

Replacement engine mounts are not particularly cheap, so check the dashboard carefully for any related warnings.
PDK Gearbox
The PDK is one of the major attractions of the 991.
It provides extremely quick gear changes while also making the car easy to use every day.
What to Check

PDK Servicing

Blocked drains can allow water to accumulate where it shouldn't, potentially damaging expensive electronic control units.
Air Conditioning Drain
Check that the air-conditioning condensation drain is flowing freely.
A blocked drain can result in water entering the passenger compartment and potentially damaging electronics beneath the carpets.
Other Drains
Check the body and scuttle drains for:
Leaves
Dirt
Blockages
Standing water
A simple water test can help confirm that water is draining correctly.
Interior & Electrical Systems
The 991 has considerably more electrical equipment than earlier 911 generations, so it is important to test everything.

The 991 uses two pollen filters.
These are relatively simple components, but their condition can provide an indication of how well the car has been maintained.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time.
As the moisture content increases, the boiling point of the fluid falls.
Check the service history to confirm that brake fluid has been replaced at the correct intervals.
Battery
Battery condition is particularly important on modern Porsches.
Low battery voltage can create a surprising number of electrical faults and warning messages.
A proper battery load test is preferable to simply checking whether the car starts.
Diagnostic Inspection & Over-Rev History
One of the most important checks on a 991 — particularly a manual car — is an electronic diagnostic inspection.
Using appropriate Porsche diagnostic equipment, a specialist can check the car's stored data.
Over-Rev Data
Manual cars can be mechanically over-revved if an inappropriate lower gear is selected at high engine speed.
The ECU records over-rev events and their corresponding operating ranges.
A specialist can determine:
Whether over-revs have occurred
Which rev range they occurred in

The severity of the event
A recent, significant over-rev should certainly be investigated before purchasing the car.
PDK cars are much less susceptible to this type of mechanical over-rev because the gearbox controls the gear selection, although circumstances such as forced downshifts can still be considered.

Diagnostic equipment can also be used to compare mileage information stored across the vehicle's various control units.
This can help identify inconsistencies that may not be obvious from the dashboard mileage alone.

Final Buying Advice
The Porsche 991.1 is an excellent 911 and, in our opinion, one of the most attractive options for someone looking for a modern Porsche with a naturally aspirated flat-six.
The combination of the 3.4 or 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine, modern interior, excellent performance and everyday usability makes the 991.1 an extremely compelling car.
There isn't one single fault that should put you off buying a 991.1.
Instead, it is the combination of age, corrosion, wear items, electrical systems and deferred maintenance that can turn an apparently excellent car into an expensive one.
Remember that even a car that looks almost new can now be over a decade old. A 2012 example may look like it has just left the Porsche factory, but underneath it will have experienced more than ten years of UK roads, weather, road salt and normal wear.
Buy on condition and history, not simply mileage.
A thorough inspection should include the underside of the car, with the undertray removed, alongside a proper diagnostic check of the vehicle.
